Yamaha FZ V1 speedometer repair before and after

The Yamaha FZ V1 speedometer repair cases we receive at Gadi Garage are usually simple, but this one was different.

The FZ V1 is one of Yamaha’s early digital-meter models, and over time, the speedometer becomes weak against heat, sunlight, and water entry. Recently, a customer brought us an FZ V1 meter that had suffered extreme damage due to both water and sun exposure.

This meter had multiple failures at the same time:

  • Burnt motherboard
  • Water inside the meter
  • Sun-faded display
  • Black patches spreading across the screen
  • Display unreadable in daylight
  • Aged and dull outer housing
  • Damaged power lines

This blog explains the complete restoration process at Gadi Garage.

How the Yamaha FZ V1 Speedometer Got Damaged

When the customer visited our Chennai workshop, he said

“Bro, the meter suddenly went off after rain.
Then the few days later it started showing black patches.
Now it’s fully dead.”

A quick inspection showed all major damage sources:

1. Water Entered Through a Weak Top Cover

The top area of the casing had become soft due to heat and age.
This gap allowed rainwater to enter the speedometer.

2. Water Reached the Motherboard

Once water touched the board, it caused:

  • Circuit burning
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Component failure
  • Shorting in power lines

3. Strong Sunlight Made the Damage Worse

Long-term UV exposure leads to:

  • Full display fade
  • Heat marks
  • Black patches
  • Very low visibility in daytime

The combination of water damage and sun fade left the meter completely non-functional.

Symptoms the Rider Faced Before the Meter Died

Before the display went fully dead, the customer noticed:

  • Display turning light brown
  • Patches spreading across the screen
  • Faded numbers and weak visibility
  • Meter turning off on road bumps
  • Backlight failing
  • Only the shape of the display visible, no numbers

These symptoms clearly showed internal failure.

How Gadi Garage Completed the Yamaha FZ V1 Speedometer Repair

This repair needed time and precision because both the display and motherboard were damaged.

1. Complete Meter Opening

We opened the meter carefully.
Inside, we found water stains, rust, and burnt motherboard sections.

2. Burnt Motherboard Restoration

This was the toughest part.
We repaired the board by:

  • Removing burnt components
  • Cleaning burnt areas
  • Rebuilding damaged circuit lines
  • Restoring broken solder joints
  • Replacing dead parts

This brought the motherboard back to life.

3. Cleaning All Water Damage

We removed all moisture marks, rust, and dirt to prevent future short circuits.

4. Restoring the Faded and Patchy Display

The display had heavy heat marks.
We restored brightness and clarity so it becomes readable again.

5. Strengthening Power Lines and Connectors

Because the board was burnt, some lines were weak.
We reinforced them for stable performance.

Apache 160 Meter Looked Completely Dead After Water Damage — Here’s How We Saved It

Apache 160 meter Before And After

Today at Gadi Garage, we received an Apache 160 digital meter that looked completely dead after severe water damage. The customer arrived with a simple request:

“Bro, if you can save this meter, please do it. I don’t want to buy a new one.”

The older Apache 160 model uses a digital speedometer that is extremely sensitive to moisture. Once water enters the meter and stays inside, it can burn the internal circuits very quickly.

In this case, the meter wasn’t just affected — it was heavily damaged and several components on the motherboard were burnt.

Still, the customer wanted the original meter restored, and we decided to take up the challenge.

How the Problem Started

The bike was left outside during heavy rain. The next morning, the meter stopped responding.

The customer noticed:

  • No display
  • No backlight
  • Meter not turning ON
  • Only a slight flicker before going completely dead

He didn’t know how bad things were inside — but once we opened it, the condition became clear.

Inside the Meter: Severe Water Damage on Every Layer

When we dismantled the meter, we found:

  • Water traces throughout the display section
  • Burnt marks on multiple motherboard components
  • Shorted ICs
  • Corroded and loose connectors
  • Several broken circuit tracks

Water had stayed inside long enough to cause electrical burns and shorts across the board.

Many mechanics would call this meter “non-repairable,” but at Gadi Garage, we always attempt restoration before recommending replacement.

How We Restored the Apache 160’s Dead Meter

1. Removing All Water and Cleaning the Meter Internally

We started by completely removing moisture, rust, and corrosion from all internal parts.

2. Burnt Motherboard Component Repair

This was the most challenging part of the restoration.

We repaired:

  • Burnt resistors and capacitors
  • Shorted IC areas
  • Damaged power supply tracks
  • Broken copper lines

Several components had to be replaced and resoldered precisely.

3. Fixing Corroded Joints

Corrosion weakens signal flow, so we refreshed and rebuilt all damaged joints to stabilise the board.

4. Display and Backlight Revival

Once the motherboard repairs were complete, we powered up the meter.

The screen finally lit up again — confirming that the unit had been successfully revived.

5. Final Assembly + Proper Waterproofing

After restoring full functionality, we sealed the meter tightly using improved waterproofing methods to prevent future failures.

Final Result: A Completely Dead Meter Brought Back to Life

We successfully restored:

  • Full display clarity
  • Bright and even backlight
  • Accurate reading output
  • Smooth, stable functioning

When the customer saw the meter glowing again, he said:

“I never thought this meter would work again. Thank you so much.”

The entire repair cost him far less than buying a new OEM meter, making the restoration even more meaningful.
